James Marshall Cattley

Please keep the family and friends of James M. Cattley in your thoughts and prayers. James was 93 years of age, a longtime resident of West Deer, and peacefully passed away, May 20th, 2024. James was born in Carnegie on January 6th, 1931, to the late Thomas William Cattley and Blanche Della Cattley. He was the beloved husband to the late Ruth Douds Cattley, his wife of 47 years. James is survived by his children Denise Noel Cattley and David James (Melinda) Cattley. James is also survived by his grandchildren, Kierah Cattley, David James Cattley II, John Lowry, Justin Lowry, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. James is preceded in death by his two older brothers, William and Ralph Cattley. James was a retired Information Technology Professional. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1953, as well as a Master of Science degree in 1962. He joined Gulf Research in Harmar in 1959 and worked in the computer division, where he developed software to search an oil and chemical database from the American Petroleum Institute (API) that was later adapted to the U.S. Chemical Patents database. Once retired, James joined the Gulf Research Retirees group and was appointed treasurer, which he served for many years. He also formed a database software consulting company, Pittsburgh Database Associates, which he ran until retiring in 2001. James had a lifelong love of music, he played the trombone for the Pitt marching and concert bands, as well as various civic orchestras. As a young man, James played in a Sunday School orchestra at Federal Methodist Church and went on to direct the Emory Band at the Emory United Methodist Church for over 25 years. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the new Vereb Funeral Home (formerly Krynicki’s), 1007 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, PA 15065 (724)-895-3433.
